2020-07-07
The Sweet Memories- Taiwan Sugar Archives Exhibition, jointly held by TSC and National Archives Administration of National Development Council (NDC), is going to move to the century-old historic site, Qiaotou Sugar Refinery, on July 13. The exhibition displays a total of 81 sugar-related documents recording Taiwan's past golden age of prosperity and sweetness. The general public are welcome to walk in this historic site to further explore sweet stories hidden in those aged documents and witness the glorious history of Taiwan's sugar industry.

In October last year, the Sweet Memories- Taiwan Sugar Archives Exhibition was first mounted at the exhibition hall in Xinzhuang Archives Administration in New Taipei City and then it is going to move to the Factory Director's Office in Qiaotou Sugar Refinery on July 13 this year. "The displayed 81 documents not merely record the development of Taiwan's sugar industry during 1940 to 1980, but also reveal TSC's overall business development and more about life trajectories of Taiwanese people," TSC explained. This special exhibition even discloses precious technical drawings of triple track extension construction of Qiaotou train station which indicate an intimate relationship between local economic development and sugar industry as well as the Qiaotou history that local residents must know.

In order to let people understand more about sugar industry development and have strong impressions, the exhibition provides visitors with access to audio tour via QR code, sensory experiences, and interactive scene simulation, etc. Therefore, people not just visit the exhibition, but also enjoy a retro atmosphere of sugar cultural heritage through senses of hearing, smell, and touch. Being led by technology, visitors' experiences of appreciating cultural relics as well as both contemplating the presence and recalling the past are pleasantly enhanced in the middle of summer time.

"Qiaotou Sugar Refinery was the first modern mechanical factory in Taiwan," TSC said. "It has gone through periods of Japan colonial rule, World War II, and rehabilitation and reconstruction, and then guided economic advancement of Taiwan." The Factory Director's Office in the refinery also benchmarks a new era of development in Taiwan's sugar industry; therefore, the exhibition held in Qiaotou Sugar Refinery is to manifest its historic status and profound meaning. Besides the exhibition, visitors are welcome to walk around in the refinery and witness the glorious history of Taiwan's sugar industry.
