A Pioneer in Resource Efficiency Improvement

The development of science and technology and human civilization has caused drastic increase in temperature over the past five decades. Global climate change not only causes extreme weather but also directly or indirectly influences the corporate operations and consumer behavior. As a state-owned enterprise, TSC has responded to government policies from changing the early sugar production process into the cogeneration (CHP) of burning bagasse, promotion of large-scale afforestation, to the development of circular economy in the past six years, such as the installation of solar power generation devices, biogas power generation, renovation of new type of pig farms, and under-forest economy, these all show TSC’s endeavor in energy conservation and carbon reduction and the commitment to protecting the earth.

Statistics of Energy Consumption

In 2022, the energy consumption within the organization was 1,450,492.18GJ, and the energy intensity was 0.05GJ/thousand of revenue. The energy intensity in 2022 was a decrease of 79.17% compared with 2021, and this is mainly because that the operation contracts between TSC and the local governments to operate the Gangshan Incineration Plant and Kanting Incineration Plant expired in November and December in 2021 respectively, and the operation business was terminated. Therefore, the total energy consumption in 2022 dropped significantly. Moreover, the annual turnover of that year also increased, leading to decrease in the overall energy intensity.

Greenhouse Gas Inventory

The company has been dedicated to carbon reduction for years. In 2021, our Xiaogang Sugar Refinery of the Sugar Business Division passed the external verification of ISO 14064-1 GHG Inventory. TSC’s overall GHG emissions in 2022 was 176,347.07 tonnes of CO2e, a decrease of 63.43% compared with 2021. The GHG emission intensity was 0.006 tonne of CO2e/thousand of revenue, reducing 66.67% compared with 2021. This is mainly because that the operation contracts between TSC and the local government to operate the Gangshan Incineration Plant terminated on November 9, 2021 and the Kanting Incineration Plant on December 21, 2021. Upon the expiration of the contracts, the operation business was terminated. Starting from 2022, TSC has excluded the GHG emissions of Gangshan and Kanting Incineration Plants. In addition, the boiler fuel in Xiaogang Factory was changed from heavy oil to natural gas in 2022, resulting in reduced GHG emissions overall.

TSC’s Carbon Emissions and Power Consumption Structure

According to the statistics of the environmental accounting system, the GHG emissions of TSC in 2022 (Category 1+ Category 2) was 176,347.07 tonnes CO2e, and the main carbon emitters are the Livestock Business Division and the Sugar Business Division, whose emissions accounted for 85% of the Company’s total carbon emissions, and therefore, will be prioritized as the targets for carbon reduction and energy conservation improvement. In addition, TSC still uses purchased electricity (from Taiwan Power Company) as the major source of electricity, accounting for 64.27% of the total electricity demands. For the green electricity, approximately 10.62% comes from the cogeneration in Shanhua Sugar factory and Huwei Sugar factory and the biogas power generation of the Livestock Business Division.
