As a recognition of its longstanding commitment to net-zero emission and sustainability and the efforts in various business ventures, Taiwan Sugar Corporation (Taisugar) has once again won the gold and silver medals in the 4th Taiwan Sustainability Action Awards for its " Protecting Cane Farm by Using Raptors to Catch Rodents" and the " Intergeneration Co-Living Circular House " this year. On behalf of Taisugar, President Li-Jen Chen attended the award ceremony today (8th). In addition to thanking all parties for their recognition, Chen also emphasized that Taisugar will continue to improve its sustainable operation and contribute to society and the environment in the future.
Since the Taiwan Sustainability Action Awards (TSAA) was launched in 2021, Taisugar has won the awards for the fourth consecutive year; including the bronze medal for ecological restoration of Liuying JianShanPi Resort, dual gold medals for land-water photovoltaic, and Circular Village, the silver medal for converting the boiler of the Hsiaogang plant to natural gas, and the silver medal for promoting ecological prevention and the intergeneration co-living circular house. Taisugar has been consistently recognized and widely praised by the world for its ESG execution and outstanding achievements.
Taisugar said that in order to create a healthy agricultural environment, Taisugar has been cooperating with the National Pingtung University of Science and Technology to implement the "Protecting Cane Farm by Using Raptors to Catch Rodents" project recently. By installing perches on the cane farms in Taisugar's Tsengwen Farm, Taisugar is able to attract raptors to catch rats and utilize natural predators to prevent and control rodents and thus reduce the use of pesticides. The project has also achieved great ecological results; it has recorded a total of 9 species of raptors and 11 species of protected bird species, including the endangered eastern grass owl (Tyto longimembris). The project has realized the coexistence of agriculture and ecology, and was awarded the gold medal. In February this year, the trial was extended to Longyan and Tongan farms, hoping to find out the best integrated rodent pest control mode to encourage more eco-friendly farming methods and to upgrade and innovate the agriculture industry.
Besides the Silver Award-winning "Intergeneration Co-Living Circular House" is another target project completed by Taisugar in 2023, following the Taisugar Circular Village in Shalun. This project not only supports the three national policies of "Circular Economy", "Net Zero Building", and "Elderly Housing," but also utilizes the "Renting instead of Purchasing" and "Building Materials Passport" approaches, which effectively reduces carbon emissions in the operation and dismantling phases. The design of the house incorporates active and passive energy-saving measures, and has been verified by an independent third party to achieve an energy saving rate of 43% and a carbon reduction rate of 25%; the annual carbon reduction is about 99,564 kg of CO2e. Taisugar has also established a standardized operating procedure for net-zero buildings, and has summarized its own experience in an energy saving handbook for future reference by architectural designers or related organizations. This will help realize the policy goal of "85% of the nation's buildings will be near-zero carbon buildings by 2050".
Taisugar added that Taiwan Sugar Corporation has always committed to providing quality, friendly and reliable products and services to customers. From devoting to eco-friendly farming methods, recycling and reusing waste generated from sugar production and pig farming, green energy and circular housing, to launching products such as Beauty Collagen Jelly, cooking oils, and canned fish with green, carbon-reducing and eco-friendly marks, Taisugar is not only demonstrating its dedication to promoting its business operations and taking care of the society and the environment, but also fulfilling its corporate commitment to continuously striving for excellence and leading the way into a sustainable future.
