To raise public awareness about global warming, promote carbon sink knowledge, and support the 2050 net-zero emissions policy, Taiwan Sugar Corporation (Taisugar) has established the "Taisugar Carbon Sink Education Center" at the Qiaotou Sugar Factory in Kaohsiung, which officially opened today (17th). The Center creatively presents the concept of natural carbon sinks through an engaging storybook format, inviting visitors to embark on an adventurous exploration with the "Carbon Beast."
After over nine months of meticulous preparation, the Center was inaugurated today, with Taisugar Chairman Yang Ming- Jou and esteemed dignitaries from various sectors in attendance. In his opening remarks, Chairman Yang underscored the urgency of addressing global warming and climate change-challenges that demand immediate and collective action. He noted that Taiwan has committed to a comprehensive policy framework aimed at achieving net-zero emissions by 2050, with forest carbon sink being a cornerstone of Taisugar's carbon reduction strategy.
Chairman Yang further noted that since 1987, Taisugar has independently financed the planting of short-term economic forests and has actively participated in afforestation efforts on former sugarcane fields, in alignment with national policies. As of March, this year, Taisugar has successfully afforested 11,525 hectares, making it the largest afforestation entity in Taiwan and a leading force in advancing green carbon sequestration initiatives.
To make the complex concept of carbon sinks more accessible, the Taisugar Carbon Sink Education Center adopts a storybook format, creating several anthropomorphic and adorable characters. Visitors can follow the "Carbon Beast" through various sections, including the Forest Carbon Sink Exhibition Area, Multimedia Zone, Immersive Forest Experience Zone, and Interactive Experience Zone. The center offers a multi-sensory exploration journey through visual, olfactory, and tactile experiences, helping visitors understand natural carbon sinks and Taisugar's afforestation achievements.
Chairman Yang also announced that the Ministry of the Interior's National Land Surveying and Mapping Centeris currently funding the restoration of the historic six-unit wooden dormitories at the Qiaotou Sugar Factory. Upon completion, Taisugar plans to expand the exhibits at the Carbon Sink Education Center further, reinforcing its commitment to promoting carbon neutrality and supporting the nation's vision of achieving net-zero emissions by 2050.
