TSC wins outstanding enterprise award for recycling oyster shells

2021-11-05

TSC implements circular economy to build a biotech material factory. It not merely recycles waste oyster shells, but also further extracts calcium carbonate (CaCO3) to make new products. The whole new circular business model has earned the one-star outstanding enterprise award for resource reuse from EPA. TSC is making all-out efforts to lead the way in resource recycling and reuse for industries.

TSC vice president Huang Min-sheng attended the ceremony today to accept the One-star Newcomer Trophy from Tsai Hung-the, EPA Deputy Minister. "The competition is held by EPA to encourage firms to promote and carry out circular economy," said Huang. The business model of reusing and recycling oyster shells shows TSC's creativity in development of circular products and services. This concept has gained full recognition from the committee.

"The biotech material factory just completed last year," explained Sun Ling-ming, deputy CEO of TSC Biotechnology division, adding that the factory extracts high-quality CaCO3 from discarded oyster shells and reuses them to make new circular products. The plant is expected to collect 50,000 metric tons of oyster shells each year. TSC not just alleviates the pollution caused from oyster farming, but also develops diversified applications from processed calcium carbonate. The model helps expand new aquaculture business opportunities and improves income of oyster farmers.

"Extracting CaCO3 from oyster shells lowers the reliance on the one from traditional energy-consuming and ecology-destroying mining of limestone rocks," TSC points out, "this pushes Taiwan to strive towards the goal of low-carbon society." The biotech material factory is the best demo site of implementing circular economy and new agriculture. TSC continues to remain committed to the circular projects closely connected with community and society, such as green energy, circular buildings, and organic agricultural parks. Recycling resources is a win-win solution for economy and environment, and it guides TSC to become an iconic enterprise of health and sustainability.
