Wandan Sugarcane Festival kicks off with fun and health on Dec 4

2021-12-02

The annual Wandan Sugarcane Festival kicks off on Saturday, Dec 4, 2021 in TSC Wandan Sugarcane Breeding Farm. The festival particularly focuses on health this year, holding a walking event along the sugarcane railway and a sugarcane culture tour. TSC invites all to enjoy walking and exploring the culture of sugar industry.

TSC has been working with the local authority to promote local cultural industries and to pass down sugar cultural heritage in Pingtung. It annually cooperates with Wandan Caifengshe to hold Wandan Sugarcane Festival, and the event has marked the 24th consecutive year. "The Wandan Sugarcane Breeding Farm has been established for 88 years," TSC points out, noting that it is not just the only base in Taiwan for sugarcane research and breeding, but also a beginning point of sugar industry culture.

"Because of COVID-19, the festival would have been cancelled; fortunately, Taiwan's successful management of the pandemic makes the event held as scheduled," said TSC. The walking event starts at 7:00 AM, and visitors can also stroll along the 5km sugar railway. Around 10:00 AM, cycling enthusiasts can cycle along the rail trails and the Wandan canal to experience a 30km long sugar cultural sightseeing. The festival enhances the understanding of sugar culture and maintains participants' healthy status to buffer against disease as well.

The event also demonstrates sugarcane breeding process so people could learn more about over one-hundred-year-long sugarcane breeding techniques. Hot TSC brown sugar ginger tea, TSC popsicles, and TSC organic poprice are served on-site; there are more activities, such as a Tang poem in calligraphy and sketching competition, and an old Wandan vintage photos exhibition. TSC prepares 1,000 bags of refined golden sugar as gifts for all participants.

"We sincerely invite everyone to come over to the festival, not just for walking and biking, but also recollecting those good old times in sugarcane fields," said TSC.
