Blood banks sound alarm amid pandemic; TSC launches event calling for public to donate blood

2020-03-20
Because of the impacts of COVID-19, there is a severe blood shortage nationwide. In order to call for public to roll up sleeves for blood donation, TSC cooperated with the Hsinying Blood Donation Center (HBDC) in Tainan to launch a “Blood Donation Week (BDW)” campaign. From March 23 to 28, each blood donor will receive a bottle of TSC Fructooligosaccharide and one 12 pack of tissue paper. On the first day of the campaign, first 50 blood donors each can get an additional NT$100 TSC gasoline coupon. TSC hopes during the COVID-19 pandemic people can roll up their sleeves to give blood and save lives.

TSC Petroleum Business Division (OBD), operating 73 gas stations in Taiwan, continues to make contributions to society and cooperates with 10 social welfare foundations, such as Huashan, Genesis, TFCF, and Eden, to organize charity events on a regular basis. BDW is one of the events held annually to call for public to donate blood.

“The outbreak of COVID-19 affects the national blood supply,” explained Mr. Xu, CEO of OBD, “so we decided to extend the time period of Blood Donation from ‘Day’ to ‘Week,’ and prepared TSC Fructooligosaccharide and tissue paper as gifts for each donors,” adding that first 50 blood donors even get an extra NT$100 TSC gasoline coupon per person. TSC estimated under the time extension and gifts given out, this campaign can collect over 600 blood units for blood banks.

“In order to provide a safe blood-donating environment, each station will conduct temperature screenings, hand hygiene, and health checks, and keeps good air circulation and appropriate sanitization frequency,” said HBDC, reminding that if blood donors have symptoms such as fever, respiratory infections, or pneumonia afterwards, they should immediately go to see doctors and inform the center; moreover, travelers returning from countries rated level 2 or 3 by Taiwan CDC and those who are the COVID-19 confirmed cases themselves or who had close contact with the confirmed cases should postpone donation for 28 days.

“Virus prevention continuing, the need for blood never ending,” TSC emphasized. The campaign aims to deliver all the collected blood units to the medical institutions through the HBDC for urgent life-saving needs. TSC calls on public to join this blood donation efforts. Each unit of blood could save one life and even one entire family unit.
