The past and present of Taiwan Sugar Company Hualien Sugar Factory (Old name: Ensuiko Sugar Refining Co., Ltd. Hualien Port Sugar Factory Yamato Factory)
In the 2nd year of Taisho era (which is 1913), the Ensuiko Sugar Refining Co., Ltd. first established a new factory (the Shouchang factory) with a daily crushing capacity of 500 tons on the south bank of Liyuweilaoxi; then, in December of the 9th year of Taisho era (1920), Shang Yamato in Fenglinzhuang, Hualien Port Office established a daily crushing capacity 550-ton Yamato factory (which is in Guangfu Township, Hualien County, which is the predecessor of today’s Hualien Sugar Factory). During this time in the Japanese Occupation, the sugar industry in East Taiwan reached an unprecedented peak.
The construction work of Yamato Factory is basically the same as that of Shou Factory, including: factory buildings, machinery and its ancillary facilities, dormitory construction and its ancillary facilities, and railway facilities. To put it simply, all the spaces and facilities are divided into three main parts: the dormitory area, the administrative area, and the sugar factory.
The Hualien Sugar Factory was announced as a cultural landscape since September 2009, and it is quite complete in the overall preservation of the domestic sugar factories in Taiwan. With the impact of globalization on the regional economy and the transformation of Taiwan Sugar Co., Ltd.’s corporate management strategy, Hualien Sugar Factory has closed its sugar production since April 2002, and has transformed and developed Hualien Tourism Sugar Factory. It currently operates a marketplace, ice store, restaurant, and "Story under the Chimney" guided commentary tour. In April 2009, the factory applied for commercial use in the industrial zone, and legally obtained the hotel license issued by the government. The Japanese-style dormitory hotel of Hualien Tourist Sugar Factory is not only a star-rated hotel, but also through the difference of different room types and sizes, travelers have the opportunity to experience and understand the industrial culture and the living space of senior sugar factory staff during the Japanese occupation. Not only that, the Hualien Sugar Factory is also a field that attaches great importance to environmental education and ecological conservation. It has become a fairly important sugar industry cultural asset activation base in Huadong, providing economic vitality in the surrounding area and plenty of employment opportunities.
So far, Hualien Sugar Factory's space can be divided into commercial use, administrative space, sugar factory, and Japanese-style dormitory group according to its purpose. Among them, the sugar factory, sugar factory railway, and the Japanese-style dormitory complex have cultural assets preservation value.
The sugar factory fully preserves the equipment required for each step of the sugar process (squeezing, cleaning, evaporation, crystallization, honey separation), including sugarcane conveyors, fine crackers, presses, boilers, generators, cane juice heating equipment, and honey separation machines Wait.
Some sugar mill railways and sugar iron production machinery left in the factory area, including steam locomotives, green sugarcane harvesters, tin carts, wooden carts, sugarcane carts, etc.
The Japanese-style dormitory group is intact, with a total of 27 buildings and 73 households, including type A, type B, type C, type D and other dormitory types regulated by the type of official residence sentenced by the Governor of Taiwan.
