Dong Hai Feng Green Pig Farm with Negative Pressure and Water Curtain

Background and Goals

  1. In line with the government's policy promoting biogas power generation for pig farms, TSC constructed the Dong Hai Feng Eco-friendly Pig Farm, integrating negative pressure ventilation and water curtain, biogas power generation, and solar photovoltaic technology, ensuring production, environmental protection, and economic benefits.
  2. The project, with an investment of NT$680 million, aims to be a model for modern, circular livestock farming in Taiwan.
  3. The facility was certified as an environmental education facility by the Ministry of Environment on December 14, 2022.

Implementation Progress

  1. The farm was completed on October 18, 2019, and began trial operation. The trial operation ended in June 2020, and the farm officially opened on July 14, 2020.
  2. It has achieved the highest level of "optimizing" certification according to the BS 8001 Circular Economy Certification.

Future Development

  1. To promote cooperation with young farmers, implement professional breeding practices, and ensure proper collection and processing of waste such as pig manure and urine through the biogas center, aiming for zero-waste pig farming.
  2. By utilizing modern closed anaerobic digestion technology, microorganisms are used to convert organic matter into energy (methane), which is then converted into electricity. This initiative promotes green energy and reduces greenhouse gas emissions.
  3. To promote the use of biogas residue and slurry for agricultural applications, field trials are conducted to compare their effects on the fertility of different crops. This initiative aims to promote the use of biogas residue and slurry as organic fertilizers.
  4. Continuing to develop environmental education programs suitable for different age groups to achieve a comprehensive age-appropriate curriculum.

Implementation Benefits

  1. Annual pork production of approximately 40,000 pigs
  2. Annual combined production of electricity from livestock and solar energy is around 3.8 million kWh, enough to power 1,084 households for a year.
  3. Annual reduction of 1,934 tons of carbon emissions, equivalent to the carbon absorption of a 174-hectare forest annually.
  4. Compared to traditional pig barns, which require 30 liters of water per pig per day, the Dong Hai Feng facility uses only 5-10 liters of water per pig per day, reducing water consumption by over 75%.
  5. A total of 1,942 people participated in environmental education activities and experiences in 2023.

Collaboration Partners and Opportunities

Processing local agricultural waste into energy, enabling resource reuse. A pilot project for resource reuse was completed and approved by the Council of Agriculture (implementation period: May 1, 2020, to April 30, 2021). During this period, the project assisted in processing 7,491 tons of pig manure and urine from neighboring pig farms, and 285 tons of fruit peels (lemon, pineapple) from nearby cooperatives and juice manufacturers.
