Huwei Sugar Factory

Description

When Huwei got permission from the Government-General of Taiwan to establish Huwei Sugar Factory on December 28, 1906, it was an undeveloped region with barren land and hardly any residents.

Since the founding of the factory to when sugar manufacturing was officially operating in 1908 and 1909, industrial settlements circling around the sugar factory formed the early foundation of the sugar railway network. This sugar railway network not only enhanced the relationship between towns and villages, but Huwei started to attract many Yunlin residents to work and live here, forming the basis of Huwei’s regional industry and construction and eventually formed the foundation of the economic, political and military development of the streets of Huwei.

To this day, Huwei Sugar Factory is opened every year for sugar manufacturing and there are still sugar trains running back and forth transporting sugar cane. The image of sugar trains running across fields and cities heading for the sugar factory and the sweet smell one can sense in downtown Huwei kept reminding us of the sugar manufacturing industry and culture of Taiwan.
