Director’s Residence

Description

The Director’s Residence was built in 1940. It was a traditional Japanese-style dormitory built by former director Kaneki Zensaburo and stands with an area of 197 m2. Its structural features include roof truss made out of Taiwan cypress, high-leveled floor, wooden floor, and the rarely seen unique brick-made foundation in Japanese dormitory buildings of Taiwan. It also has a front and back yard. The building was well-preserved and is currently the most representative Japanese-style wooden dormitory in the factory.

After restoration (1946), it was renovated into the dormitory of the deputy director and its interior design was slightly changed due to accommodation demands in 1955. Large Ceylon-olive Elaeocarpus and Pagoda Trees were planted in the garden, adding its elegant environment with some sense of poignancy. The movie “Prince of Tears” had its sets here, representing the features of a military dependent village from the 1950’s.

During the era when resources was scarce, there were always some regrets in the old nostalgic memories. Due to its elegant appearance, after the completion of renovation in 2012, many people have applied to take pictures in it.
