Climate change driven by global warming has become a critical environmental issue that countries around the world must urgently address. Taiwan’s 12 key strategies are intended to help the earth cool down and fight global warming. TSC has also taken on the responsibility of leading smaller state-owned enterprises with large ones, and has made contributions to afforestation on flat land, natural carbon sinks, and carbon sequestration. To raise the public's awareness of global warming, promote carbon sink knowledge, and assist in the 2050 net zero policy, with the recommendation of the Legislative Yuan's Economic Committee and the support of the local government and local people, Taiwan Sugar Corporation (Taisugar) has selected the Kaohsiung Qiaotou Sugar Factory to set up the " Taisugar Carbon Sink Education Center", which will be officially unveiled and opened on August 17, 2024,with the aim of actively promoting the concept of carbon neutrality and realizing Taiwan's 2050 net zero emission vision.
To make the complex topic of carbon sinks more accessible to the public, Taisugar Carbon Sink Education Center adopts a storybook format, featuring a series of endearing anthropomorphic characters. Visitors are guided by the character “Carbon Beast” as they explore the Forest Carbon Sink Exhibition Area, Multimedia Zone, Immersive Forest Experience Zone, and Interactive Experience Zone. Through a multisensory journey involving sight, smell, and touch, visitors embark on an engaging carbon-themed adventure, deepening their understanding of natural carbon sinks and learning about the results of TSC’s afforestation efforts. On the day of the unveiling, the Kaohsiung Operation Branch also teamed up with the National Environmental Research Academy to hold a DIY activity in the center. Children and adults used recycled milk bottles as containers and Taisugar sugarcane bagasse as the base to plant Taisugar's afforestation tree species, seedlings of Fraxinus griffithii. In addition to practicing the circular economy, they also planted a green force for Taiwan's future carbon neutrality.
