Waste Management

Based on the consideration of cherishing natural resources and reducing the environmental impact, TSC actively promotes a green value chain so that the stages of birth, growth, decline and abandonment of a product can be completed under the conditions of consuming the least resources possible in the eco-friendliest way.

Reduction of Waste Generation

In 2023, the process waste reduction measures were implemented, and the proportion of waste recycling reached 99.31%, an increase of 0.2% compared with 2022. This was mainly attributed to various operational hotels of TSC offering eco-friendly room incentives and replacing small single-use amenities in hotel rooms with large refillable ones. Additionally, personal care products are no longer provided actively, leading to a significant reduction in non-resource waste, thus increasing the resource utilization rate. These efforts demonstrate TSC’s determination to reach the recycling, stabilization, detoxification, and economization of waste.

2023 Achievements of the Promotion of Green Products and Services of Each Units

Marketing Business Division and Biotechnology Business Division
The new product packaging design of the Marketing Business Division is in line with the policy of limiting over-packaging of products announced by the Ministry of Environment (MOENV), Executive Yuan, to reduce the use of packaging materials and generation of waste, easing off the environmental load. For example, the lined frame of Taisugar’s Clam Essence is folded on four edges to strengthen the structure and texture of the carton, and the size of the gift box is reduced to comply with the regulations on restricting excessive packaging of products; In 2023, the Biotechnology Business Division continued to use 2,565,815 glass bottles with reduced weight for the Clam Essence Products, a 7.6% decrease in weight compared with the old glass bottles, which is converted to a 20,526.5 kg reduction in glass use, reducing the impact of glass to the environment.
Sugar Business Division

Sugar Business Division changed business waste of bagasse and filter mud into recycled materials as the soil amendment, reaching the purpose of circular economy. In 2023, the recycled and reused bagasse was 38,688 tonnes; the official product name of the filter sludge is “fertile soil,” and 38,623 tonnes of the fertile soil is used to improve the soil of TSC’s farmland, and sold 3,483 tonnes externally, achieving the reuse of resources and reducing the use of chemical fertilizers.

In 2022, the egg cards of Trichogramma chilonis were provided to both our self-operated farms and external farmers for controlling pests in crops such as sugarcane and corn. Additionally, TSC also provided the eggs of Corcyra cephalonica as the materials to feed Chrysopidae to function as a pest control for fruits and vegetables. The Bureau of Animal and Plant Health Inspection and Quarantine announced on August 18, 2022, that the sheet with Trichogramma chilonis in Huadong District is listed in the natural enemy subsidy object, a status that has remained unchanged until 2023, which can encourage farmers to reduce the amount of pesticide use.

Livestock Business Division

The processing capacity of pig manure in 2023 was 5,214.02 tonnes, of which 1,205.01 tonnes (23.11%) of pig manure produced in livestock farms is recycled (composted) and fermented into organic fertilizers for farmers to use to meet the government’s goal of green environmental protection. The organic fertilizers used on the farmland can improve the physical properties of soil, increase yields of crops, and also the farmers’ income. In addition, 4,009.01 tonnes (76.89%) of the pig manure was entrusted to contract manufacturers for treatment.

In accordance with the Statute for Prevention and Control of Infectious Animal Diseases and the Waste Disposal Act, pig carcasses and discarded afterbirths in all pig farms shall be destroyed, chemically processed or otherwise disposed of as necessary, and shall not be cut, processed, transported, stored or sold for human consumption. Therefore, the Livestock Business Division strictly abides by the government regulations. All the pig carcasses and afterbirths from TSC livestock farms are entrusted to qualified manufacturers for chemical processing to avoid being embezzled by unscrupulous operators and entering the meat supply market that will engender the health of the public and also damage the reputation of the Company. In 2023, the processing volume of dead pigs was 1697.85 tonnes.

Agriculture Business Division
The tissue culture bottles used for the production of Phalaenopsis seedlings are reusable glass culture bottles instead of non-reusable plastic cases. In 2023, a total of 912,314 glass culture bottles were used, and all of them were recycled for reuse, with the reuse rate of 100%.
Leisure Business Division
The 467.73 tonnes of general business waste and 4.66 tonnes of waste cooking oil generated by the Leisure Business Division were centrally collected and recycled as well as reused by legal operators, producing 185,882 m3 of wastewater. Among this, the wastewater generated by Liuying Jianshanpi Resort, amounting to 35,051 m3, underwent treatment through equipment and was reclaimed for irrigation purposes within the park area.

In 2023, the amount of waste handled included 1,311.56 tonnes for landfill, 1.88 tonnes for incineration, 187,789.31 tonnes for recycled waste.  In2023, the waste disposal amount decreased by 2.39% compared with 2022.
