Promote Scientific Breeding

Animal welfare is closely linked to food safety and the risk of disease outbreaks. TSC manages pig breeding in accordance with the Ministry of Agriculture’s Animal Industry Act and the "Key Points for Pig Farm Production Management Operations" of the internal control system, and complies with the regulations on the transport, loading and unloading, and slaughter of animals and aquatic animals. The HACCP management system is implemented to eliminate food hazard risks. After hazard analysis (including biological, physical, and chemical) of each process step from raw material acceptance to shipping, effective control measures and conditions are established to prevent, eliminate, or reduce food hazards to an acceptable level. There were no violations of laws and regulations in 2024 and voluntary standards were complied with.

TSC ensures the stability of pork quality, texture, and flavor through a sound and comprehensive pig breeding system, feeding management, and feed nutrition. We are also willing to share pig-raising experience and encourage more young farmers to invest in it, so as to enhance the competitiveness of Taiwan’s pig farming industry.

Pig-friendly Rearing

The Renovation Project of Agricultural Circulation Pig Farms is not only a good solution to turn pig farming industry into an eco-friendly one, but also a global trend to improve animal welfare. The use of negative-pressure water curtain in the pig housing provides comfortable and pollution-free environment for pigs. The adoption of smart management and automated feeding system significantly improves farming efficiency while enabling real-time health monitoring, creating a win-win-win situation for pigs, TSC, and consumers.

The design and spatial layout of the pig housing comply with EU animal welfare and animal-friendly farming regulations. The pigs are castrated within 7 days of birth. There are toys in the pig house for the pigs to play with. In the planning of new pig house, the sows will only be kept in a narrow pen for one month from artificial mating for the observation of whether they are pregnant. The dimensions of the sow stalls are designed in accordance with the Guidelines for Animal-friendly Husbandry issued by the Ministry of Agriculture (1.64 square meters of activity space per sow). The farrowing pen (not a narrow pen) is also designed to be compliant with the animal-friendly guidelines (6 m2 of activity space per sow) for the sows to have sufficient space for movement, creating a friendly environment for delivery and lactation. The design of the hog house is compliant with the EU regulations with the activity space of 1 m2 per head.

TSC’s Livestock Business Division operates pig farming business based on five core principles: genetic optimization in breeding, industrial-scale farming, scientific disease prevention, environmentally friendly and park-like environments, and humane animal welfare practices. In addition to feeding the pigs with self-produced "green feed" (self-produced feed without antibiotics and added with fructooligosaccharides (FOS), natural molasses and lactic acid bacteria) to maintain intestinal health and enhance immunity to reduce the risk of disease, we also develop precise nutritional feed formulas based on the nutritional requirements of pigs at different growth stages to improve production efficiency.

In recent years, the pig farm has combined the national energy transition and new agricultural policies to plan the transformation and upgrading of the pig farm. In 2020, TSC take the lead in completing the demonstration field - Don Hai Fen Agricultural Circulation Farm. The pig farm uses modern facilities such as "new closed negative pressure water curtain pig house", "biogas power generation system" and "rooftop solar photovoltaic system" to realize waste-to-resource transformation, develop green energy, and reduce the odor of pig farming and the impact on the environment to ensure environmental hygiene and safety. At the same time, it also refers to the "EU Animal Welfare Requirements" to implement a friendly breeding environment, making it Taiwan's first modern pig farm with "agriculture, tourism, environmental education, and green energy". We continue to promote the "Agricultural Circulation Pig Farm Renovation Investment Plan" in order to drive the transformation of the domestic pig farming industry and realize the vision of environmental protection and sustainable development.

As mentioned above, TSC's meat products come from pigs raised in pig farms with carbon reduction goals, and comply with ISO2200 (including) HACCP certification operating procedures, and have obtained TGAP (Taiwan Good Agriculture Practice) and 51 product carbon footprint labels. In the future, TSC is also actively planning to apply for carbon reduction labels and pork exports to expand the international market.

The Opening of the Academy of Agriculture and Animal Husbandry

Since its establishment in 2017, the Academy of Agriculture and Animal Husbandry has held 1-2 pig farming training courses every year. The course enrollment targets include young farmers, agricultural vocational school students, college summer interns, unemployed youth, and workers assigned by Taiwan Sugar Corporation contractors, allowing trainees from different backgrounds the opportunity to receive professional pig farming training and also injecting new blood into the industry. As of 2024, the total cumulative number of people trained in animal husbandry courses has reached 361, of which 245 are young farmers, and 234 young farmers have successfully graduated.

The pig farming basic training is a 6-week course that include theoretical courses and a four-week pig farm internship. The course covers pig "feeding management, feed nutrition, breeding, biosecurity, teamwork, production cost management, circular economy, wastewater treatment and animal welfare". Taiwan Sugar Corporation not only invited professional lecturers from many domestic colleges and universities, but also introduced experienced senior practitioners in the pig farming industry to share practical experience with trainees. For the internship course, trainees are arranged to conduct on-site operations at the pig farm under the Livestock Business Division of Taiwan Sugar Corporation, including daily work such as semen collection, mating, pregnancy testing, and care of piglets and sows, so that trainees can fully understand the overall operation of the pig farm from daily feeding management to details such as reproduction and biosecurity, laying a solid foundation for their future careers.

In addition to theories and internship, the Academy of Agriculture and Animal Husbandry also planned field visits. Through the display of Dong Hai Feng Agricultural Circulation Park, trainees can learn how to combine animal husbandry, green energy, resource recycling and environmental education. The also participate in the environmental education courses arranged by the park to learn about pig production and circular economy. In addition, visits to slaughtering and cutting plants are also arranged, combined with courses such as slaughtering and meat processing, so that students can have a more complete understanding of the entire pig farming industry chain, experience every part from breeding to processing, and understand the details and operation logic of the pork industry.

TSC continues to adjust the courses through the trainees’ feedback after the courses for the improvement of practicality, ensuring that the content they learn meets the actual needs of the industry. To data, some participants have successfully been placed in pig farms after the completion of training. It is also hoped that through diversified and professional training courses, more young farmers will be attracted to understand the pig farming industry, enhance their employment skills, and their willingness to enter the pig farming industry.
