Guatemala Coffee Contract Farming

As a state-owned enterprise, TSC responds to the government's diplomatic policy needs and uses its many years of experience in agricultural products and sales to provide specific and substantial assistance to our diplomatic allies in Central and South America from an economic and social perspective, and to promote exchanges and cooperation between countries.

Since 2017, Taiwan Sugar Corporation has been committed to importing coffee beans from Central and South America for sale in the Taiwan market. As of the end of 2023, a total of about 310 metric tonnes have been imported. Guatemala and Taiwan are long-term and loyal allies. Since the establishment of diplomatic relations in 1933, the two sides have actively promoted various substantive exchanges and cooperation. In 2023, Taiwan Sugar Corporation cooperated with national policies and purchased rainforest-certified coffee beans from its ally nation Guatemala. In 2024, TSC purchased 64.8 metric tonnes (accounting for 2.9% of the annual food procurement amount of the Marketing Business Division), and will continue to test and evaluate the feasibility of purchasing coffee beans from other producing areas in Guatemala.

High Lands Small Farms Coffee - Guatemala Antigua

Guatemala's volcanic geology and climate have unique advantages and are very suitable for growing coffee trees. At high altitudes, the large temperature difference between day and night makes coffee trees grow slowly and retain more sugar. Due to the low temperature, enzyme molecules are produced, and the flavor is more layered and sweeter. Therefore, the higher the altitude, the higher the grade of the coffee beans.

There are eight major coffee bean producing areas in Guatemala. Taiwan Sugar Corporation carefully selects the most prestigious "Antigua coffee beans". These strictly selected coffee beans are high-quality SHB (strictly hard beans) grown at an altitude of over 1,500 meters. They are 100% Arabica beans, rich in Central and South American character, with a rich and sweet fruity aroma, complemented by creamy nutty notes and a hint of caramel in the finish, offering a multi-layered and indulgent flavor experience. After being imported into Taiwan, it is roasted and manufactured to make a boutique coffee that suits the tastes of people in Taiwan.

In view of the keen competition in Taiwan's coffee market, the Marketing Business Division has spared no effort to actively promote coffee products through a number of activities such as coffee tasting sessions, high-speed rail car press conference, coffee puncar tours across Taiwan, coffee and music fair and in-store tastings. It has cooperated with many well-known corporations such as the High Speed Rail Corporation, AGC Display Glass Taiwan Inc., China Airlines, CPC Corporation and FamilyMart, and has been favored by Taiwanese consumers, gradually increasing its popularity and opening up the market.

Starting from 2024, the High Speed Rail Corporation replaced hot coffee drink in its cars with Taiwan Sugar Corporation's Guatemalan Highlands Smallholder Farmer Coffee from the 1st to the 7th of each month. Starting from July of the same year, China Airlines’ First Class VIP Lounges in Terminal 1 and Terminal started to use our company's 1 pound packed of Antigua coffee beans. In November, CPC Corporation commissioned our company to provide "CUP & GO Coffee: Highlands Smallholder Farmer Single-Origin Coffee 1 Pound packed Beans" and provides freshly brewed coffee services at "CUP & GO”. Our company's coffee products are sold via distribution channels including Taisugar’s own retail outlets and major hypermarkets (Carrefour, RT-Mart and A-Mart). In addition, we have contacted major companies to use Taiwan Sugar Corporation's coffee beans, and Taiwan Sugar Corporation will provide coffee machines. This preferential project has been well received by companies/enterprises.

One Cup of Coffee, One Blessing, One Hope

In 2023, Taiwan Sugar Corporation purchased raw coffee beans from smallholder farmers in the "highlands" and "remote areas" of Guatemala, helping a total of 61 Antiguan smallholder farmers so that they can directly obtain profits without being maliciously exploited. These smallholder farmers picked fully ripe coffee beans by hand, and each bean was ripe and plump. Through professional roasting, the aroma and flavor of the coffee carefully grown by local smallholder farmers are perfectly presented. Taisugar then sells boutique coffee in the form of coffee filters and coffee beans at affordable prices to increase sales.

Since 2018, TSC has returned part of its coffee revenue to coffee producing countries, and has built three schools in remote areas in Honduras where it was originally sourced. To continue the spirit of public welfare coffee: "One cup, one blessing, and one hope", TSC cooperated with the local non-profit organization "Guatemala Próspera " in Guatemala to expand the existing school building into a middle school, providing classroom resources for students in grades 7 to 9, so that the seeds of education can continue to grow and thrive; in 2024, the construction of the fourth school in Guatemala was completed, and a new classroom and principal's office were officially put into use, benefiting 275 kindergarten and elementary school students, providing a better learning environment and help school administration.
