Rooted in Sustainability: Donghaifeng Honored with Pingtung County Environmental Protection Award

As the world moves towards net-zero emissions by 2050, environmental education has become a crucial force driving sustainable transformation. The Dong-Hai-Feng Agricultural Circulation Park, under the TSC umbrella, has transformed from a traditional pig farm into a circular economy demonstration base. Its achievements in green energy pig farming, resource recycling, and environmental education promotion earned it the "Excellent" rating in the Pingtung preliminary review group of the 10th National Environmental Education Award, showcasing the potential for the livestock industry to transform from a "NIMBY" (Not In My Backyard) to a "Neighborly" (Friendly Neighbor) environment.

Dong-Hai-Feng Livestock Farm has been operating for over 60 years, and had faced challenges such as odor, wastewater, and operational efficiency. After being converted into the "Dong-Hai-Feng Agricultural Circulation Park" in 2020, it introduced closed-loop negative-pressure water curtain livestock sheds, biogas power generation, and a resource recycling system, transforming livestock waste into green renewable resources. It became the world's first facility to obtain BSI circular economy certification. At the end of 2022, the park further obtained environmental education facility certification, extending its reach from a production site to an educational one, leading the public to a renewed understanding of the modern livestock industry.

The park integrates issues such as pig farming, waste management, water conservation, and green energy into its environmental education courses. Through raised, slatted floors and water-saving measures, it effectively reduces water consumption by approximately 70%. Pig manure is fully incorporated into resource recovery processes for biogas power generation, biogas slurry irrigation, and compost production, ensuring the complete utilization of production waste. Since its opening, Dong-Hai-Feng has received over 4,000 visitors, including those from schools, communities, international groups, and livestock companies. It shares its own transformation experience, providing data, case studies, and lessons learned to help the industry lower barriers to transformation. In the future, the park will continue to deepen digital management and big data monitoring, promote the value of green energy pig farming and circular agriculture, and become an important demonstration base for Taiwan's net-zero transition and environmental education.
