In 2025, TSC’s purchase of Guatemalan coffee from our
diplomatic ally for the “supporting education in rural communities” initiate
won the Special Award of MOEA’s Buying Power. This “Guatemala Coffee Marketing
and Education Support Project” was awarded the Buying Power Special Award by
Ministry of Economic Affairs, showing the achievement of a state-owned
enterprise in supporting social innovation services through commercial
procurement.
This project emphasizes sustainable social value.
Taiwan Sugar Corporation combines responsible consumption, international
cooperation, and educational investment. With every cup of Small Farms Coffee,
we help create a better learning environment for students in rural Guatemala,
bringing tangible and positive change.
This award-winning project, undertaken by Taiwan Sugar
Corporation through the Ministry of Economic Affairs' Social Innovation
Platform in collaboration with Impact Hub Taipei, involves purchasing coffee
from small-scale farmers in the highlands of Guatemala, a diplomatic ally of
Taiwan. A portion of the trade revenue was reinvested in building primary
schools in the area, aiming to improve the small-scale farming economy and
education in rural areas. The first phase of the project was completed in 2024,
with the construction of a 19-square-meter classroom in the Las Flores
community of Sumpango, Sacatepéquez province, Guatemala. The classroom is
equipped with desks, chairs, lighting, and teaching equipment, improving the
learning environment for 227 children, and was officially put into use in
November 2024.
It has been the ninth year for TSC to promote the
Small Farms Coffee Project. In the future, we will continue to directly source
specialty-grade green coffee beans from smallholders in single-origin regions
in Guatemala at reasonable prices, which not only stabilizes these farmers’
livelihoods but also allows consumers to enjoy premium estate coffee at
affordable prices. Furthermore, every purchase helps support education and
talent development in rural areas, bringing hope and opportunities for the following
generation.
TSC focuses on the promotion of the High Lands Small
Farms Coffee for our ally. By integrating sustainable business practices, we
strengthen collaboration with social enterprises and international partners to
expand our positive impact on society. Through a coffee procurement-based
business model that supports international education, we not only deepen supply
chain responsibility but also demonstrate the role of Taiwanese enterprises in
actively participating in global sustainability and cooperation with Taiwan’s
diplomatic allies, making a cup of coffee a sustainable force connecting
consumption, origin, and hope.
The "Buying Power Social Innovation Products and
Services Procurement Incentive" is promoted by the Small and Medium
Enterprise and Startup Administration of the Ministry of Economic Affairs. It
aims to encourage public and private enterprises and government agencies to
prioritize the procurement of products or services provided by social
innovation organizations, thereby forming a supply and demand cooperation
relationship and implementing responsible consumption and production.
