Located in Pingtung County, Dong Hai Feng
Agricultural Circulation Park under the Taiwan Sugar Corporation has been built
into a demonstration park with multiple features, including high-tech pig
farming, waste-to-energy, green energy and environmental protection, and
environmental education. The subsequent 13 pig farms of Taiwan Sugar
Corporation also used this as a benchmark, upgrading the original traditional
open pig houses to modern closed water curtain pig houses, and introducing
biogas power generation equipment to properly collect and utilize the biogas
produced by the fermentation of pig manure and urine, converting the biogas
into green energy, reducing the impact of the pig farming industry on the
environment. It is hoped that it can play a leading role and encourage more
related industries to be willing to invest in the biomass energy industry,
improve efficiency, implement resource recycling, and help promote the
sustainable development of domestic animal husbandry.
Renovation of Agricultural Circulation Pig Farms
The "Agricultural Circulation Pig Farm
Renovation Investment Plan" for 13 pig farms is the first large-scale
investment and renovation project of TSC since the development of the livestock
business. Through the renovation, the wastewater and waste treatment processes
in the farms will be strengthened and controlled, and the operating procedures
will be reviewed and improved. The pig manure and urine in the pig farms will
be collected and divided into four treatment paths. The purpose is to let all
parties redefine the pig farming industry and lead the development, improvement
and upgrading of the domestic pig farming industry.
This project
involves as many as 13 pig farms and also the needs of different feeding
stages, and the entire project is huge and complicated. Therefore, is divided
into two phases of construction. Phase I, consisting of six facilities, was
gradually completed, entered trial operation and entered the acceptance stage between 2025
and 2026. The pigs were
successively put into the 7 pig farms renovated in the second phase for trial
operation since 2026, and the farms are currently in the trial-run phase.
A model of circular economy in pig farming
TSC has been engaged in livestock breeding
since 1952, making it a pioneer in pig farming in Taiwan. To address
environmental issues related to pig farming and in response to the government's
5+2 industrial innovation plan, TSC has incorporated ecological balance,
environmental protection, and green concepts into its livestock farms, driving
the transformation of the pig farming industry. Our "Dong-Hai-Feng
Agricultural Circulation Park" is the first agricultural and livestock
farm in Taiwan that combines green energy, water recycling, and biological
recycling, and is also the world's first livestock farm to obtain BS 8001
international standard certification for circular economy. With a vision of
"zero waste, zero emissions, and zero accidents", it practices
emission reduction, deodorization, and resource recycling, successfully
overturning the traditional NIMBY (Not In My Backyard) perception of pig farms,
and in 2024, it won the 6th " National Enterprise Environmental Protection
Award- Silver Award".
The park incorporates negative pressure water
curtain enclosed livestock housing, automatic feeding, ventilation and
deodorization systems, and a smart management system. Combined with raised
slatted floors and a manure scraping system, water usage for cleaning pig
housing is reduced by more than 75%. Pig manure and urine are transported via
closed pipelines to a biogas center for anaerobic digestion, generating biogas
for power generation. The biogas residue is combined with sawdust and waste
mushroom bags to produce organic fertilizer, and the biogas slurry is treated
and recycled for irrigation and park water use, effectively realizing the
resource utilization of livestock waste. Solar panels are installed on the
roofs of the livestock housing, providing cooling, power generation, and carbon
reduction benefits, supporting the domestic renewable energy transition.
Moreover, this circulation park obtained the Environmental
Education Certification in 2022, making it the first environmental education
site in Taiwan with the background of green energy pig farming, continuously
promoting knowledge of animal welfare, smart animal husbandry, odor reduction,
and manure resource utilization. In 2025, it received 1,408 visitors and
provided environmental education training, and was awarded the Excellence Award
in the preliminary review of the 10th National Environmental Education Award.
